Ruth Salmon was born in Smithers, BC, in 1955 and obtained the degree of Bachelor of Home Economics in 1977. Following graduation she became a Food Marketing Consultant with Alberta Agriculture, then took up the position of Manager, Alberta Dairy Promotion Board. During this period she completed the Management Development Program and the Advanced Marketing Management program at the Banff School of Management, Alberta.

Ruth gained further experience in working within the agri-food industry as General Manager , Alberta Milk Producers Society; Advertising Manager, Dairy Bureau of Canada; and as a Marketing Consultant with her own company. She accepted the position of Executive Director of the BC Shellfish Growers Association in 1996. Using her knowledge of both marketing and shellfish aquaculture, Ruth ventured into private industry. In 2001 she became a partner in Stellar Bay Shellfish Ltd., a shellfish processing and marketing company on Vancouver Island . Since 2002 her career has continued to expand into the aquaculture industry.

Along with her husband Keith, Ruth resides in Nanaimo , BC.
