Paul Kitos was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, in 1927 and graduated with a BSA (Dairying) in 1950. He then entered graduate studies and obtained an MSA (Dairying, with emphasis on Dairy Bacteriology) in 1952, under the supervision of Jack Campbell. This was followed by a PhD (Biochemistry) at Oregon State University, 1956.

Dr Kitos joined the DuPont Co., Newark, Delaware, in 1956 as a Chemist, then in 1959 accepted a faculty position in the Department of Biochemistry, University of Kansas. He retired from that position in 1996.

Dr Kitos and Gwyn reside in Lawrence, Kansas. They have six children.
