Harold Atkinson was born in New Westminster in 1922.

After gaining a BSA in 1950 he worked for Dairyland temporarily. Later he left the Dairy industry to work in his Father-in Law’s Lumber Yard – Fletcher Lumber.

Mr Atkinson founded and operated several businesses. He founded Irly Bird Lumber Yards with Kerrisdale Lumber and Alpha Lumber, then went into the roof-truss business and formed a company called Structural Wood Components. Another related business that he founded was Machine Stress Rating Lumber (MSR Lumber Co.)

Mr Atkinson retired in 1987. He and wife Ruth reside on Salt Spring Island. They have 4 children and 10 grandchildren.
