Douglas G Blair was born in New Westminster, BC, and raised on a purebred Holstein farm, Langview Holsteins, Langley, BC. He received the BSA degree from UBC, specializing in animal breeding, genetics and economics

From 1964-68 he was Sire Analyst with the BC Artificial Insemination Centre, Abbotsford. In 1968, Douglas founded Western Breeders Service, a forerunner company of Alta Genetics Inc. He was CEO of Western Breeders until 1988 when a merger resulted in the formation of Alta Genetics Inc. and he continued as CEO of that company. Other career positions have included President, Blair Holsteins Ltd; President, Mapleleaf Genetics Inc (US); Vice-President, Mill Creek Ranch; and Vice-President, Semex Canada.

Douglas Blair was the founding President of the Canadian Association of Animal Breeders and the Canadian Embryo Exporters Association, and he is a Past President of the Canadian Livestock Exporters Association. He also served as Co-Chairman of the Canadian Sectoral Advisory Group on International Trade for 4 years, an advisory group to the Canadian Minister of Agriculture and Trade. Doug is currently a director of the Canadian Dairy Network (CDN), National Association of Animal Breeders (NAAB), and the Council for Dairy Cattle Breeding in the US. As an industry leader and outstanding citizen he has also served on the Canada-USSR Business Council, Agricultural Institute of Canada; Canadian Society of Animal Science, Ducks Unlimited, 4-H Youths of Canada, Stars Air Ambulance, and the Salvation Army.

Doug Blair has received several awards for his services to Canadian Agriculture and public service. He received the Pinnacle Award for outstanding business success, and the Canadian Export Achievement Award. He also received the Honourary Commemorative Medal for Outstanding Contributions to Canada (1993).

He is married to wife Anne and they have 3 children, Nancy, David and Jill.
